Cagayan de Oro City's LED Traffic Lights

I watched the local news just a few minutes ago and I saw a segment where public utility vehicle drivers were complaining about the alleged inefficiency of the newly installed “unique” traffic lights in the major thoroughfares of Cagayan de Oro City. I could not help but ask … are they serious?

I am a resident of Cagayan; and although I use the city thoroughfares everyday, I can not compete with the PUV drivers in terms of the frequency with which they ply these routes. But seriously, it’s not really that bad.

If you’ve not seen these new traffic lights, I bet you’re wondering what makes them unique. Well, for one, they are called LED traffic lights and they display more than just the three colored circles; in them you will also see diminishing bars of light signifying a countdown of time. The diminishing bars looks like the signal strength indicators found in cell phone screens – the lesser the signal strength, the less bars are seen.  Plus you’ll also see numbers telling you how many seconds more you have to wait before you can cross the street.

Thus it’s not just stop, look, and listen anymore (hahaha!)!

I personally find these traffic lights more effective; more driver-friendly. They are also more pedestrian-friendly as the signs for pedestrians are more visible and are really working.

They're working!

How about the drivers’ complaints?

Well, let’s just say some people, they like to complain practically about anything and everything, from the ever increasing and unstoppable gasoline prices to the transport strike that’s going to happen this Monday. And this is a free country, so that’s just normal, and there’s nothing wrong with that!

And oh by the way, I know that there’s more to this traffic light bruhaha alright! I know for example that this is a political issue (I can easily understand why).  But that’s beyond me … because my point here is simple:  those LED traffic lights works for me just fine, and I like them better than the old ones we used to have!

How about you? If you’ve not seen these traffic lights, come visit Cagayan de Oro!

Have You Been to Cagayan de Oro City Lately?

Have you been to Cagayan de Oro City lately? I am asking this because if you haven’t, I’m sure that when you come again, you will be surprised and impressed with what’s going on in the City. In a nutshell, there’s just no stopping Cagayan de Oro from progressing!

For starters, there are at least 2 huge constructions going on now for two (2) malls – the Centrio by Ayala along CM Recto Avenue and the Paseo Del Rio along the new Macasandig & Carmen Bridge.

Then there’s the ongoing construction of what is described as the would-be tallest building in the City – the Gateway Tower in Limketkai.

The construction of the new fly-overs in the City may have inconvenienced a lot of commuters, but it’s still a very welcome development. These two new fly-overs are in the Carmen-Macanhan area and in the Lapasan area.

The Agora Market in Lapasan is now called Market City which now houses the new SM Savemore, and it’s bigger, cleaner, and safer. A lot of boutiques can also be found in the Mall-like structure, plus the famous restaurant Mang Inasal.

Along Kauswagan Highway, or in the Kauswagan Junction, from where the old Makro was, is the new SM Savemore Kauswagan. It’s big and just like the main SM Savemore in the SM City; it’s an ideal place to shop for groceries.

And there‘s the numerous new hotels like NHotel which caters to the growing clientele of the City, from local tourist to convention attendees or participants.

The number of subdivisions and condominiums in the City has also increased tremendously; so fast that I get surprised every time I pass by one new development after another, especially in the upper Carmen area and in Kauswagan.

Limketkai Mall

For people who love to shop and go malling, Limketkai is simply a destination to include in your itinerary. Limketkai Mall is described by many as Glorietta-like; fully air conditioned with upscale stores that sell clothes, bags, shoes, jewelry, appliances, mobile phones and other electronic gadgets,  and plenty of restaurants and food chains.

SM City Cagayan de Oro

Of course there’s also SM City in upper Carmen; and as can be expected, SM City is another good place to shop and dine and spend time with the family. It has one of the best grocery stores in the City; then there’s the SM Superstore known for their numberless stocks of shoes for men, women, and children. SM City is also home to lots of restaurants and fast food chains that offer affordable food for everybody! SM Mall also has 4 movie houses; beauty salons like David’s Salon and Salon de Rose.

And this list can go on and on …
